Legends are falling - take the baton

The legends are falling. There’s probably more than these, those that I’m not familiar with, but these are ones I’ve known to have revolutionized the fields they functioned in, leaving behind big shoes to fill, if they can be filled at all.

Hearing of Robin’s death when I woke up this morning, I heard it again. That call, subtle, but loud enough if you’re careful to listen. That call calling for the legends of this generation to take center stage. Those of the previous generation are slowly but surely leaving us, waving us goodbye, at the same time seeking those they’ll leave the baton behind with. Will it be you?

I grew up around the jams of Brenda Fassie, MJ and Whitney Houston. All gone. Too soon some may argue, but they were here, they’re gone now, and they left their mark. Not only to look back to and admire, but also to build on and move forward, attempting to do better. What I love most about these legends is that they all soared with their God-given gifts and talents. They were preachers, politicians, news anchors, poets, radio DJs, actors, singers, name it. Because nobody just exists, we’re all legends.

Heard a preacher say we’re all born to lead, and of cause I objected when I first heard it…if we’re all leaders then who’ll follow? He went on to explain that we lead in the area of our gifting, and in the area we are not gifted, we follow behind those who are. I’m a preacher, I’ll lead you in all things pertaining Scripture, but when I get to a doctor, I follow cue. So in that way we all get to shine, testifying to the fact that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”. What we lack is courage, courage to pursue that passion, to follow the fire that burns so strong in our hearts. My friend Sam spoke so excellently on Women’s Day on the issue of courage. She said courage wouldn’t be needed if there wasn’t a challenge, she said courage needs you to be defiant towards the situation at hand. Stop waiting for things to be easy, for things to be perfect…what if you don’t have that much time?

So will you listen to that call? Will you use your gifts, stop focusing on money and seek a fulfilling, mark-making life? My pastor, speaking to the youth, said that your gift will fund you; and if you develop yourself, striving to do best at what you do, the funds will keep growing as you do. So will you write that book, perform that poem, go to that audition, sign up for that class, put together those recipes? Exactly what are you waiting for? Now’s the time to start building what will later put you in the spot light. Today is all you have, tomorrow is not promised; make your move, leave your mark.
