DIY
I got bored with my twa (teeny weeny afro), so I braided it, by myself! It was the third time I braided a head, first braided my lil sis twice last month, all with the help and guidance of the sisterhood on YouTube. Exciting times we live in huh, you can get through life with all those DIY blogs and vlogs.
The up side of DIY is always the cost. I'm not stingy or anything, I just like finding creative ways to save. The only thing I spend blindly on is food. Okay, okay, junk (I can't make my own Lays, and yes, I've tried). Anyway, I only spent R40 (for the extensions) on almost waist-length box braids. That is a bargain you will find no where on this earth! Last time I had such braids I spent R200 on labor alone, and that was almost two years ago. Sure it took me longer doing it myself (two days) compared to the six hours I took doing my sister's but gosh was it rewarding! I'm still smiling when I look into the mirror and my wallet is summersaulting!
This had me thinking just how many things I could manage to do with my own hands. Sure I bake every other week and make my own scarves for winter, but I'd never attempted hair before, in fact I was convinced I couldn't even though I'd never tried before. This made me realize that we cry and complain for things we want and need without questioning ourselves if there was a way I could learn the skill instead of time and time again seeking after the product. I am in no way implying that you'll be able to do absolutely everything, I'm just saying explore a little more. You'll still need help from others when things aren't within you abilities, but do so while knowing what you're capable of.
My pastor once shed light on the very famous Philippians 4:13 which reads:
"I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
He started off by saying this verse doesn't mean you can do absolutely everything. My theological knee jerked. Sure I was aware of the context surrounding the verse but this didn't sound right; until he explained. He explained that this "everything" is everything within your line of calling/purpose. Then I got it, he didn't need to explain further. I just thought of 1 Corinthians 12 which speaks about the body of Christ consisting of many different parts and how there's an interdependency between all the body parts. Putting the two Scriptures we're saying: a hand can do everything within the capabilities of a hand through Christ who empowers it. Imagine if the hand wanted to have the sense of smell like the nose. Imagine it poking holes through its pores so that it could somehow obtain the ability to smell. It's ridiculous, it's like a man trying to fall pregnant!
So explore but don't loose your common sense while you do. We need you to be you and do all the things that you can do so the rest of us who can't can come to you. Doing it uniquely to you will guarantee that even when we copy the skill, we leave the "secret ingredient" behind. Pretty much all our mommas can fry chicken, but we still buy KFC.
So here's a challenge: this week try to do something by yourself, no matter how big or small. Okay maybe not too big, you can't go building houses now, lol. Just try something new and feel your face beam with a sense of pride as you realize how broad your territory of capabilities is.
