"It's not my place"
There's a short story I've been fascinated with ever since coming across it. Maybe you've heard of it before. It's the story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
There couldn't be more truth in five paragraphs. It's speaks so much truth about the society we live in where no one is accountable for anything or anyone yet we feel the right to judge and be upset. We're live in a "it's not my place" society; always excusing ourselves from taking action simply because it's someone else' job, even though we're capable of doing it.
It's like kids who'll sit in filth simply because it's not their turn to do the dishes or mop the floor. We're sitting in filth in our society because no one wants to lift a finger, we pretend not to see instead. But problem is, we're equally affected by what we pretend not to see.
Sure people who have positions should be held accountable but it's obvious that we'll never get much done if we'll wait for their sleeping consciousness to awake before they take accountability. And sometimes it's not even about that, sometimes they just have too much on their plate to have their eyes everywhere, we need to lend a helping hand where we can. We can't be so careless about the poor in our society simply because it's the government's job to come up with programs to meet their needs. We can't let kids grow up so recklessly simply because it's their parents job to raise them.
We restrict ourselves too much, thinking we need to have great resources in order to help. But everyone has a voice, we can talk to these young girls who don't know better when we get a chance. Everyone has a cellphone, we can call the cops when we see something isn't right. We all have food in the cupboards, we can give one loaf of bread away to those who need it when we come across them. You see, it is our place to make this world a better place for ourselves and our children, it is our place to not let the wound of evil fester while we're around.
Proverbs warns us from withholding good when we're in power of doing it.
"Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act" Proverbs 3:27
But why is the verse discriminating? Who doesn't deserve good? Those who have the potential to do something buy choose to beg instead. Those who forsake free education for the streets. Those who want bread but refuse the job that could help them earn it. Those who know better but still act in ignorance.
So let's not turn a blind eye as things deteriorate in our midst. Let's not leave a job anybody could have done only to be angry that nobody did it because we all thought somebody would do it.
Share with those in need this season, don't drive past that accident, don't ignore your neighbors cries; say something, do something, it will make a difference.
