My kinda guy #3

Lucky number three is based on another character I love when it comes to matters of the heart, Jacob. The bad boy who had a heart for God. I love the story of how he met his wife Rachel, and how the Bible tells us that he fell in love with her ‘at first sight’. My favourite thing about him is how he works so hard for her.

“So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.” Genesis 29: 20

Seven years. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Years. That’s 84 months, 2 555 days. Then a guy calls you for a week and gives up. One says they do pay, that’s what Lobola is for. Yes they pay money, but little pay the patience and perseverance it takes to have a wife. If all I cost you is money, then it’s easy to let go of me, you’ll just make more money. But if I cost you your sweat and blood, it is not an easy decision to make.
And as the old English saying goes, easy come easy go. We have so many divorces, so many people quitting and giving up on their marriages because it didn’t cost them much to gain anyhow. Think of Jesus, we do so much wrong and get things wrong so many times, but never do you hear him say he’s fed up and now giving up on us. Why? He knows how much we cost him. We cost him his life. And if he gave up now, he would have wasted his very own life.

And after those 7 years, Jacob found he was cheated and given the wrong woman. Most guys would settle, a woman is a woman after all. But not Jacob. So I conclude that it wasn’t just Rachel’s beautiful form compared to Leah’s weak (older) eyes that attracted him. It was something he loved about her. And that is why he worked another 7 years for her.

This is not what many may call ‘playing hard to get’. It’s not playing at all. It’s being careful with one’s heart. Making sure you give it to one who deserves it, who has worked hard and proved himself to be worthy of it. One who will value it because he knows how much it cost him to win it.
